The St. Louis Cardinals swept the Pirates in a double-header last night.
The game one score came to 6-5 in seven innings. The Cardinals Kolten Wong hit a homer in the first, but in the bottom of the same inning, the Pirates took advantage of a challenge that allowed Brian Reynolds to reach base on catcher’s interference. That scored Adam Frazier as the bases were loaded. Kevin Newman had an RBI as Ke’bryan Hayes scored on Newman’s sacrifice fly. St. Louis took the lead for good as they would score two runs in the second and third innings and one in the 4th. The Pirates would try to come back with a line drive bases-clearing single that scored Jose Osuna, John Murphy and Adam Frazier.
In game two, several mistakes in the sixth inning doomed the Pirates to a 7-2 loss. In the 5th, the Pirates were doing well, leading after a two-run homer by Bryan Reynolds and Chad Kuhl was cruising, but in the 6th, Kuhl thought he had strike three on slider, but the umpire called it ball four. Kuhl nearly struck out the next hitter, Paul Goldschmidt, but he reached base on a catcher’s interference. After a four pitch walk to load the bases, Kuhl was pulled in favor of Chris Stratton.
Then it became a series of errors for the Pirates, as first Gregory Polanco fired the ball home after a sac-fly to right field, instead of going to the cut-off man. Then Ke’Bryan Hayes threw widly to home on the next hit to allow another run to score. After that, Josh Bell slipped while trying to get the ball to second base, and that allowed the throw to go into shallow left field, and allowed another run to score. Then Stratton left one hanging over the plate for Dylan Carlson to hit a three-run homer.
The Pirates and Cardinals play tonight at 6:40 on WCCS.
