On Monday, former Diocese of Greensburg Bishop Edward Malesic was installed as the new Bishop of Cleveland.
The installation service was held at the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist in Cleveland yesterday. The number of people in attendance was low due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, but the service was streamed through the Cleveland Diocese’s website.
Malesic was ordained in 1987 and served as the Bishop of the Greensburg diocese for five years starting in 2015, and helped guide the diocese through several tough times. Along with the Pandemic, Malesic helped the diocese deal with the opioid epidemic and the fallout from the Catholic clergy child sex abuse scandal. During the pandemic, the Bishop helped expand the online presence of the diocese by streaming services online for those who could not attend in person, including the diocese’s first ever “Virtual Holy Week.”
Malesic said that his goal as the Bishop of Cleveland, he will try to bring young people back to the church. His flock includes 700,000 people and eight counties.
The Greensburg diocese will be operated by an administrator that will be chosen by a special committee no later than eight days from yesterday. That administrator will serve until Pope Francis names a new bishop.
