SOFTBALL
Indiana held a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the 7th inning but had to fight back from a game-tying rally to beat the Golden Rams in 9 innings, 8-5. Indiana racked up fourteen hits. In the 9th, Maggie Cunningham’s soft liner popped out of the Highland’s shortstop’s glove as she dove for the ball, and Olivia Zimmerman singled. Haley Hamilton singled in Cunningham and Indiana then pulled off a double steal, with Hamilton ending up at second and pinch runner Hannah Ianarelli scoring on the throw home. Chloe McHugh then singled in Hamilton. Addie Stossel got the win for Indiana after entering the game for Cunningham in the 8th. Cunningham, McHugh, Hamilton, Zimmerman, and Ella Myers all had two hits for Indiana. Myers, Stossel, and Cunningham all doubled.
West Shamokin knocked off River Valley, 14-2. The Wolves broke open a 1-0 game with seven runs in the 4th inning and six in the 5th. Lily Jordan had three hits and seven RBIs, thanks to two home runs. Aleya Talmadge also had three hits, and Maria Young and Madi Keirn each had two. Leah Mondi worked three-and-a-third innings for the win, with Avery Elkin pitching the final inning and two-thirds. For River Valley, Ana DiSimone had two hits.
Marion Center blanked Homer-Center, 13-0. The Stingers piled up 16 hits, including three each for Abbey Smulik and Cheyenne Silvis. Smulik had two triples and a double, Silvis had two doubles. Lexi Roush had two hits, including a triple, and Lydia Miller had two hits, including a double. Lyndsey Mallory had two hits as well. Silvis struck out 14 for the shutout win.
Cambria Heights scored seven runs in the first inning but had to fight off a strong challenge from Purchase Line to beat the Red Dragons, 11-8. Ellie Bender had four hits for the Highlanders, with two home runs and six RBIs. Meghan Wholaver, Abby Zeglen, and Martina White all had two hits.
Northern Cambria erased a 3-0 deficit and downed Penns Manor, 7-4. Laci Lanzendorfer had three hits and three RBIs for the Colts and Morgan Hassen also had three hits. Skye Bernecky had two hits. The Comets had five players with one hit, including freshman Allison Rhea’s three-run home run in the first inning.
BASEBALL
Indiana came up with a big win over Somerset yesterday at IUP. Jake Slebodnick has the story.
United scored four runs in the top of the 4th and went on to an 8-3 win over Conemaugh Township, avenging an early-season loss to the Indians. The Lions had seven hits by seven different players. Brady Coleman had two RBIs and Brad Felix had a double. Isaac Worthington got the win, giving up one run in three-and-a-third innings.
Penns Manor stepped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but Northern Cambria answered with 3 runs in the first two innings, plus five more in the 4th to go on to a 12-2 win over the Comets. Amin Lieb had two hits for Penns Manor.
West Shamokin broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run 4th, then added a run in the 6th and two more in the 7th to top River Valley, 8-5. Niko Buffone had two hits for the Wolves and Max Long had a hit and three RBIs. For River Valley, Cole Stuchal had three hits, Sammy Yanits had two hits, including a home run, and Dom Speal had two hits.
Cambria Heights scored all of its runs in the 2nd inning in an 18-0 win over Purchase Line.
LACROSSE
The Indiana Girls Lacrosse team defeated Norwin, 14-11, in a non-conference game. Kyla Weaver led all scorers with six goals and two assists. Brynlee Schawl, Caroline Albert, and Kate Lehman all scored two goals, and Gianna Brody added one. Anna Buterbaugh stopped seven shots in goal, and Kate Lehman hit the 100 mark for draw controls on her career.
Indiana raises its record to 11-4 overall. The team hosts Greensburg Central Catholic for its last regular season contest on Wednesday before heading into the WPIAL playoffs next week.
HERITAGE CONFERENCE
The Heritage Conference has postponed today’s scheduled conference track and field championships until tomorrow, starting at 2:15 at United.
