The Pirates could not come from behind and fell to the Kansas City Royals 4-3 last night.
Kansas City started the scoring with Adalberto Mondesti with a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the first inning. In the third, Maikel Franco singled on a pop-up to shortstop Erik Gonzalez of the Bucs, but it allowed Mondesti to score. Salvador Perez scored on a wild pitch later in the inning.
The Pirates got on the board in the top of the 4th as Jacob Stallings hit a double on a sharp line drive to left field that scored Colin Moran. The Royals would score the eventual game winner on a sharp grounder to Cole Tucker from Franco that scored Mondesti. Josh Bell would hit a two-run homer in the 8th, but the Royals snuffed the Pirates comeback in the 9th to seal the deal.
Steven Brault took the loss for the Pirates. Now 0-3 on the year, he gave up three runs, including a home run on five hits in four innings.
The Pirates and Royals play again tonight.
