The Pittsburgh Penguins have traded Nick Bjugstad to the Minnesota Wild in an effort to trim their salary cap, but in return, the Pens received a conditional 2021 draft pick.
The Pens would have been on the hook for Bjugstad’s $4.1 million next season on the final year of a six-year deal Florida gave him in 2014. With the trade, the Pens would need to provide half his salary.
He was acquired by the Pens along with Jared McCann for forwards Derick Brassard and Riley Sheahan in February of 2019. In the 45 games he has played with the Pens over two seasons, he had 10 goals and 16 points. He also missed all but 13 games this last season after having core muscle surgery in November and back surgery in May.
