Fire crews were at work on Labor Day as they were summoned out twice for rekindles of a tire fire that started Saturday night in Young Township.
The fire was initially reported at 5:00 PM on Saturday, and 13 fire companies were called out for the fire along Taylor Road near the Indiana-Armstrong County line. Crews were called out for rekindles throughout the day Sunday, including a rekindle in the 10:00 hour that required eight fire departments to respond.
The fire rekindled twice on Monday, with Iselin and Coal Run Fire departments dispatched at 11:18 AM. Altman fire department was called in to stand by for Coal Run fire department.
Another rekindle was reported at 1:34 PM, with Elderton, Saltsburg and Kiski Township called out. Just after that point, North Apollo fire department was called in to standby for Iselin fire department.
The fire was at a remote wooded location along Taylor Road. An estimated 1,200 tires were discarded there. The Department of Environmental Protection has been called in to help out.
