Cam Heyward took questions yesterday, a day after agreeing to a contract extension that incorporates this season into a five-year deal worth more than $75.1 million. Heyward will be the highest paid defensive player in NFL history over the age of 30.
Heyward says it was a relief to finally get the deal done.
The Steelers’ 2011 first-round pick out of Ohio State says it’s time to play football, and he believes the Steelers can be pretty good.
The Steelers have signed veteran punter Dustin Colquitt, son of former two-time Steelers Super Bowl champion Craig Colquitt. The 38-year-old Colquitt was released in April after winning the Super Bowl last year with the Kansas City Chiefs. Jordan Berry was released as a subsequent move.
The Steelers have named their captains for this season. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be a captain for the 12th time in his career. Heyward will be a captain for the sixth time; Maurkice Pouncey for the fourth time; T.J. Watt gets his first captaincy and special teams ace Jordan Dangerfield is also a first-time captain.
The NFL season will begin Thursday when the Super Bowl Champion Chiefs take on the Houston Texans in Kansas City. The Steelers will wrap up the first week of the season with a Monday game against the New York Giants in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
