The Steelers’ front office capped a busy weekend by signing defensive end Cam Heyward to a four-year contract extension with $65.6 million in new money. In all, Heyward is under contract for five years at $75.1 million.
A day after releasing their 53-man roster, the Steelers revamped it, bringing back veteran quarterback Josh Dobbs and releasing Duck Hodges and re-signing safety Sean Davis.
Dobbs had been traded to Jacksonville last year for a fifth-round draft pick. He was released by the Jaguars on Saturday.
Davis was released by Washington after signing as a free agent there in the off-season. He was injured last year in week two and didn’t play for the Steelers after that. To make room for Davis on the roster, the Steelers cut safety Curtis Riley, who was later added to the practice squad.
In addition to Riley, 13 other players were signed to the Steelers’ practice squad yesterday. Among them was the only 2020 draft choice on Saturday’s cut list. Safety Antoine Brooks Jr. is joined on the practice squad by cornerback Trajan Bandy, linebacker Jayrone Elliott and defensive linemen Daniel McCullers and Henry Mondeaux. On offense the team signed seven players including receivers Deon Cain and Amara Darboh, running back Trey Edmunds, tight end Kevin Rader, and offensive linemen Anthony Coyle, Derwin Gray, and Jarron Jones. The team also added punter Corliss Waitman to the practice squad.
And today, ESPN’s Field Yates says the Steelers are bringing former Kansas City punter Dustin Colquitt to town for a tryout, hoping to upgrade from longtime punter Jordan Berry. Colquitt has been the Chiefs’ punter since 2005 and has made two Pro Bowls. The son of former Steelers two-time Super Bowl punter Craig Colquitt was released by the Chiefs in April.
