Weary firefighters on Saturday night probably knew they would be back at the site of a large tire fire in Young Township yesterday, and they were.
Thirteen fire companies from Indiana, Armstrong, and Westmoreland counties battled the blaze along Taylor Road near the Indiana County/Armstrong County line throughout Saturday night after the initial call at around 5 PM Saturday. They were back at the scene for a rekindle in the overnight hours.
Then yesterday morning just after 10 o’clock, Iselin-West Lebanon and Coal-Run-McIntyre firefighters were summoned for another rekindle. Within the hour, Elderton, Saltsburg, Tunnelton, Blairsville, Burrell Township (Armstrong County) and Kiski Township (Westmoreland County) were called. They were soon followed by Creekside and Parks Township, with numerous fire companies on standby and Murrysville and Citizens Ambulance medics on scene for any health problems.
There were more than 1,200 tires discarded at the remote wooded site of the fire. The Department of Environmental Protection has been notified to aid in the aftermath, and firefighters are no doubt on the alert again today.
Compounding matters yesterday, Indiana firefighters were dispatched to fight a brush fire along Wertz Road in Young Township shortly before noon.
