Today is the last official day of Steelers training camp. Pro Bowl guard David DeCastro still has not returned to practice after leaving the field last Friday. Rookie receiver Chase Claypool, the team’s top draft pick, did not practice, either. Cornerback Cam Sutton rode a stationary bike and is expected back today. Guard Stefen Wisniewski and long snapper Kameron Canaday were limited as well.
At practice yesterday, the team focused on special teams play. Coach Mike Tomlin said that without exhibition games to evaluate players, it will be tougher to find the best special teamers, but every team is facing that situation.
Steelers owner Art Rooney the Second is open to extending to Ben Roethlisberger’s contract beyond 2021. Rooney told The Athletic that an ideal situation would be Big Ben is healthy after this season and wants to continue playing. Roethlisberger is 38 and his contract is up after next season.
The NFL deadline to trim rosters to 53 players is tomorrow. The Steelers open the season on Monday Night Football against the New York Giants on September 14th.
