As the Homer-Center School District athletic teams get ready for their upcoming season, the school board Thursday night approved changes to the district’s athletic health and safety plan.
The changes approved last night brings the district health and safety plan in line with the PIAA requirements that will allow competition, provided that occupancy limitations are adhered to. According to the Governor’s plan, the limit for indoor events is 25 people, and the limit for outdoor events like football games is 250 people. The PIAA said that any fans that attend would count toward that 250 total, along with players, coaches and staffers.
The vote was 6-2 with Michael Schmidt and Robert Valyo voting against the changes.
In related matters, High School Principal Jody Rainey said that the Heritage Conference will meet on Friday. He said that with the 25-person indoor restrictions, there is a proposal for no spectators, but for outdoor sports, spectators would be allowed, but how many seats available to the public would depend on the visiting team, and any leftover seats would be distributed at the discretion of the schools.
He also said they would discuss having cheerleaders and marching bands in attendance for home games only.
In other business from the school board meeting, the board approved hiring Amanda Johnson as the elementary health room assistant.
