Prior to the start of the Indiana Borough Council Meeting on Tuesday, IUP president Dr. Michael Driscoll gave a presentation about the university possibly opening an osteopathic medicine school.
IUP’s council of trustees in December approved starting the exploration of developing the new school. Driscoll said last night that in rural America and in rural Pennsylvania, one of the challenges is that there are not enough physicians to help the population.
Driscoll added that the school would be a big financial boon for the community as well as the university.
While timelines still remain very fluid, Driscoll said accreditation could take at least three years before they would be allowed to start accepting students.
In other business, council approved by an 11-1 vote to allow the Indiana Pride Festival to be held at IRMC Park on June 10th from 10 AM to 6 PM. The one no vote came from Jessica Frick, who said that while she trusted the police department in their ability to keep the community safe, the security plans were not clear to her.
Council also approved a motion to award the paving contract to Quaker Sales, Inc. at a cost of $196,150.
