The Pirates had to wait out a 2-and-a-half hour rain delay before getting started in Washington yesterday, and the wait was not worth it, as they lost the game to the Nationals. Joe Block has the recap.
Manager Derek Shelton says Washington starter Josiah Gray was really tough.
Shelton says the first month of the season went very well, with a National League-best 20-9 record that is second only to Tampa Bay’s American League leading win total of 23 games. And Tampa Bay happens to be next on the Bucs’ schedule. Shelton says they will have to play good baseball.
Pirates starter Johan Oviedo says he – and the team – will bounce back from a rough Sunday.
The Pirates yesterday traded catcher Tyler Heineman to Toronto for infielder Vinny Capra. Heineman came to the Bucs after the Blue Jays put him on waivers last season. He’s played in three games for them this season and has been toiling mostly in Indianapolis. he was designated for assignment last week.
Capra is a 26-year-old utility infielder who has appeared in eight games with the Blue Jays this season. He was 1-for-5 with two walks. The Pirates assigned him to Indianapolis.
The Pirates also reassigned Drew Maggi to Altoona after he got two hits and an RBI in Saturday’s 16-1 win over the Nationals.
The Pirates and Rays face off tomorrow night in St. Petersburg, Florida. It will be a 6:15 airtime on WCCS.
ALTOONA CURVE
The Altoona Curve were rained out in Reading yesterday. After a day off today, the Curve’s 12-game road trip continues tomorrow night in Richmond.
