The Steelers were very active on night two of the NFL Draft.
For their first pick of the night for the Steelers, which was also the first pick of the second round, the black and gold kept it in the family and selected Penn State Cornerback Joey Porter, Jr. whose father played for the Steelers and was part of the team that won Super Bowl 40. Porter, Jr. was a second-team All-American by the AFCA, the Associated Press, FWAA, Walter Camp Football Foundation and CBS Sports in 2022, and was first team all-Big 10 by both coaches and media and was named to the AP’s all-big 10. In 2022, he started 10 games at corner and finished the season with 27 tackles, 21 of them solo tackles, 11 passes defended and one fumble recovery.
Later in the second round at pick 49, the Steelers picked up Keeanu Benton from Wisconsin. The Defensive Lineman is 6-foot-9, 309 pounds who was a starter in 36 games over four years. In his senior year, he notched 10 tackles for a loss and four sacks.
After that was more trade work from Omar Khan. He gave the 80th overall pick to the Carolina Panthers and in exchange, got the 93rd pick, which was also in the third round, along with the 132nd pick, which is in round 4. Khan gave up the 4th round pick to the New England Patriots in exchange for moving up in the first round. In the third round, the Steelers picked up another Georgia Bulldog, tight end Darnell Washington. He started 14 games in 2022 as Georgia repeated as national champions, catching 28 passes for 454 yards and two touchdowns.
The draft continues today with rounds four through seven. Along with the newly acquired 4th round pick, the Steelers will have two picks in Round 7.
