It was a perfect day for the Pirates…almost. The only thing that could have been better was if Drew Maggi had gotten a hit. Greg Brown has the story of the Bucs’ win over the Dodgers.
Manager Derek Shelton says the Pirates offense patiently waited for their chances and came through when they got them.
Shelton says Roansy Contreras was outstanding.
Drew Maggi got a tremendous ovation from the fans and his Pirates teammates when he finally got a chance to play after a 13-year wait in the minor leagues. For him, the moment was not event tainted when he struck out.
The Pirates will be after a second straight win this afternoon at PNC Park. It will be a 12:10 airtime on WCCS. First pitch is at 12:35 from Mitch Keller [2-0, 3.64 ERA], who faces Dodgers left-hander Julio Urias [3-2, 3.33 ERA].
With Bryan Reynolds returning from the bereavement list, the Pirates kept Maggi in the big leagues, instead optioning outfielder Canaan Smith Njigba to Indianapolis. They also put reliever Wil Crowe on the injured list with a sore shoulder and called up pitcher Cody Bolton from Indy.
The Pirates also held a news conference to formally announce the contract extension signed by Reynolds. It’s an eight-year deal worth $106.75 million, with a team option for a ninth season.
Reynolds said he is excited to be a part of what the Pirates are building on the baseball field.
General Manager Ben Cherington said Reynolds was the catalyst for the contract extension.
ALTOONA CURVE
Just a day after taking a beating from Reading, the Altoona Curve turned it around, beating the Fightin’ Phils 9-3. Henry Davis hit his 5th home run of the season and Liover Peguero, Mason Martin, Matthew Fraizer, and Jacob Gonzalez all had two hits.
Sean Sullivan pitches game three of the series for the Curve tonight in Reading.
