It’s the biggest day of the NFL offseason…the first round of the NFL Draft gets underway tonight at 7 o’clock with the Carolina Panthers on the clock for the first overall selection. The Panthers will take a quarterback and while they have declined to publicly say who they will be taking, they do say they have made their choice and team owner David Tepper is talking a lot about Alabama’s Bryce Young. The Texans, Cardinals, Colts and Seahawks round out the top-five selections.
The Steelers have the 17th overall selection as of now, but the team seems open to trading the pick to move up or down in the draft order. They also have the first pick in the second round thanks to the trade last season of Chase Claypool to the Bears. Coach Mike Tomlin says that 32nd overall choice might give the Steelers a chance to trade up in the draft.
Tomlin says the Steelers have a lot of flexibility with the 17th choice, and will likely be listening intently if other teams call with an offer.
The most prominently-named possibilities for the Steelers are Penn State cornerback Joey Porter Jr., Georgia offensive tackle Broderick Jones, cornerback Deonte Banks of Maryland, or a trade up in the draft to take Georgia defensive lineman Jalen Carter.
Rounds two and three are tomorrow, with the draft’s final 4 rounds on Saturday. As of now, the Steelers have the 17th, 32nd, 49th, 80th, 120th, 241st and 251st picks in the draft.
