SOFTBALL
River Valley scored three runs in the 4th inning and held off a late Homer-Center rally to defeat the Wildcats, 5-3. Sara Bollinger had two of the six Panthers hits and drove in two runs and Emerson Skirball and Hannah Artley both doubled.
Leah Mondi threw a 5-inning two-hitter, striking out seven as West Shamokin topped United, 10-0. Malena Stewart and Maddie McConnell each had two hits and Stewart had a double and drove in three runs. Cleo Long doubled for United. Abby McConville gave up all 10 West Shamokin runs, but only two were earned. She struck out eight.
Portage dropped Penns Manor, 7-4. Lyndsey Castel had three hits, Sydney Castel and Makenna Redfern each had two hits for the Mustangs.
Cambria Heights scored three runs in the first inning and two in the 5th to beat Northern Cambria, 5-0. Alexis Griak had two hits, including a home run, and drove in three runners for the Highlanders. Sidney Nihart threw a three-hitter and struck out two.
BASEBALL
Indiana was looking for a split of their two-game series against North Catholic yesterday, but they couldn’t get it done. Jake Slebodnick has the story.
River Valley rallied from three runs down for a 6-5 extra inning win over Homer-Center. Tied 2-2 after 7, the Wildcats scored three in the top of the 8th, but the Panthers’ Cole Kennedy-Citeroni doubled in the game-winning run in the bottom of the inning. River Valley scored two runs in the bottom of the 6th to tie the game after trailing 2-0. Caleb Palmer homered twice and drove in four runs for the Wildcats. He threw the first five-and-two thirds innings and struck out three. Niko Vadala tossed seven innings for River Valley and gave up just two hits, walking four and striking out seven. In addition to Kennedy-Citeroni’s two doubles, the Panthers got two hits each from Dom Speal and Caden Vresilovec.
West Shamokin scored five runs in the 2nd and broke open their game against United, coming away with an 11-1 win. Jude Olinger had three hits, with a double and a triple; Josh Kunkle drove in three runs, and Max Long had two hits. Long went all five innings, giving up two hits and walking four while striking out nine.
Portage scored seven runs in the final two innings to down Penns Manor, 12-4. The Mustangs had five extra-base hits, four of them doubles. Billy Dobrowlski and Luke Scarton each had three hits, Mason Kargo had two hits and three RBIs, and Easton Slanoc, Jonah Irvin, and Isaac Jubina all had two hits. For Penns Manor, Amin Lieb, Connor James, Carter Smith, and Logan McCunn all had two hits.
Northern Cambria scored a run in the first inning and two more in the second and then held off Cambria Heights for a 3-1 win.
