A post that appeared this weekend on Indiana Borough’s website has generated a tremendous amount of online reaction, especially from people angry over a proposed mask-wearing ordinance that will appear on Tuesday’s council agenda.
Prompted by an increase in positive Covid-19 cases in Indiana County since mid-July, the ordinance imposes fines of $50 for a first offense, $75 for a second offense, and $300 for a third offense for those who do not follow what it terms “Exhibit A”, which is the set of guidelines issued by the State Health Department. However, a warning may be issued instead of a citation for the first offense.
The reaction was swift after we posted a story yesterday, with about 200 comments in the first couple of hours and the pace continuing throughout the day. As of this morning, more than 600 comments had been made to the story and the posting of the ordinance.
A protest rally is planned for 5:30 Tuesday afternoon at the Borough building, before council meets. The virtual meeting is at 7 PM, via Zoom.
