The Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County has renewed a contract with IUP to monitor water quality at the Beaver Run Reservoir.
Reports say that the authority will pay $91,000 to perform the quarterly evaluations of the water at the reservoir that serves more than 130,000 people, mostly in northern Westmoreland County, along with small parts of Indiana and Armstrong Counties. The fee is a reduction from last year’s fee of $133,000. Authority director Michael Kukura said the reduction was the result of cuts in the previous year’s monitoring program due to the coronavirus pandemic that prevented IUP’s faculty and students from conducting the tests in the spring.
The agreement between the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County and IUP started in 2011. An air quality contract was added in 2015 as the authority dealt with gas well drillers setting up within the dam’s property boundary. The municipal authority is looking to renew the air quality contract in the fall.
The results of the water quality studies can be found on IUP’s website.
