After giving up 26 earned runs to the Detroit Tigers in 20 innings Friday and Saturday, Pirates pitchers allowed just two on Sunday.
Unfortunately for the Pirates (3-13), Detroit’s Spencer Turnbull gave up only one run in seven innings and the Tigers held on to defeat the Bucs, 2-1, and sweep the three-game series at PNC Park.
The Pirates grabbed the early lead when Colin Moran scored on an Erik Gonzalez single in the first inning.
Detroit tied the score in the top of the fifth, then Miguel Cabrera had the go-ahead hit with a two-out, two-strike single against right-hander Richard Rodriguez in the eighth inning to score Jonathan Schoop.
Five Pirates pitchers, starting with starter Steven Brault, held the Tigers to two runs on just four hits.

Pittsburgh now gets an unscheduled three-day break as the Pirates’ three-game series in St. Louis, Monday through Wednesday, was postponed due to coronavirus concerns.
The Pirates also announced that utility infielder Phillip Evans will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a concussion and fracturing his jaw in a collision with teammate Gregory Polanco in foul territory on Saturday.
