Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate dropped slightly over the month of March.
The state Department of Labor and Industry announced that the unemployment rate went down two-tenths a percentage point to 4.2%. The national unemployment rate also ticked down one-tenth of a point in March to 3.5%.
The state’s civilian labor force, which is the estimated number of residents working or looking for work, was up 5,000 over the month. Resident employment rose by 12,000 over the month of March, while unemployment fell by 7,000. The total number of non-farm jobs were up 12,500 over the month to a new record high of 6,108,900 last month. Jobs increased in seven of the 11 published industry super sectors, with the largest jump seen in the area of leisure and hospitality, which represented a gain of 4500 jobs. Also, professional and business services increased to record high levels as well.
The local employment numbers are expected in early May.
