The Board of Governors of the State System of Higher Education is putting off a decision on any potential tuition increases until July.
According to a statement, the board is expressing an interest in possibly freezing tuition once again, but the decision is being delayed in order to see what the potential increase in funding for the state system will be in the 2023-2024 budget. While the state system is requesting a 3.8 percent increase in state funding, which represents about $21 million more, Governor Josh Shapiro’s proposed budget has only a 2 percent increase. State System Chancellor Dan Greenstein said that the PASSHE schools “are the most cost-efficient way to tackle shortages of teachers, nurses, STEM and social services professionals, and the need for more business and community leaders.”
Abigail Hancox, an IUP student who serves on the board of Governors as a student representative, urged the board to raise tuition rates.
There have been no tuition increases in the last four years.
