The Penguins say defenseman Jan Rutta underwent successful core muscle surgery this week.
Rutta was solid for the Pens for the first 42 games of the season before missing the next 15 games with an undisclosed injury. After he returned for 11 games, he then missed 10 more with a suspected knee injury. In all, he missed 27 games on the season.
The veteran has two years left on his Penguins contract. He is expected to be completely healed from the core muscle injury in 8 to 10 weeks.
