This weekend is celebration weekend at IUP and some special members of the IUP community will be honored as part of the festivities.
The events will start tomorrow with a celebration of philanthropy where donors will be recognized. Jada Walker-Briggs, a senior communications media student from Glassport and a welcome week leader for the university, will be the keynote speaker. There will also be a volunteer recognition breakfast on April 22nd, and later that day will be the annual Distinguished Alumni Award Banquet. Local recipients of the Distnguished Alumni Award include
- Current Alumni Association Board President Tonya Hsiung formerly of Rochester Mills and now in Lancaster
- Long-time Indiana resident Mary Morgan who just completed a 30-year career where she was an assistant vice president for alumni and friends
- Brandie Smith, an Indiana native now living in Potomac, Maryland, who is the current director of the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute in Washington
The other five from outside Indiana County include
- Christina Bennike, current executive director of Conflict Recovery International
- Patrick Cambier, a partner with Interventional Cardiology Consultants
- Rich Caruso, president of the Foundation for IUP who helped spearhead the $245 million residential revival
- Retired Brigadier General Robin Swan, who is currently a senior executive at the Pentagon
- Colonel Daniel Toven, commander of the West Point Band and recipient of several army honors including the Meritorius Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
The honorees will also spend time with students and community members as schedules permit.
