Firefighters from Blairsville fire department returned to the scene of a massive fire last night to prevent a possible rekindle.
The call went out to Blairsville Firefighters at 11:03 last night as crews returned to the intersection of Market Street and Stewart Street. Ab Dettorre of the Fire Department said that there was natural gas exhaust from a chimney that could have caused a re-kindle of the fire above Fox’s Pizza Den. As of right now, the cause of the original fire remains unknown. Officials said the fire started above the restaurant in one of the apartments.
Two people in the apartment had to be rescued as soon as fire crews got to the scene, and Blairsville firemen Jonathan Santoro and Zach Dixon were able to get the two out from a second-story window, while others were evacuated safely. Dixon said their training and instinct kicked in.
Fire efforts were hampered by a lack of water due to a hydrant freezing and by a water main rupture. When the fire department learned of the break on Monday, the Blairsville fire department asked that surrounding departments keep their tankers full just in case, and those tankers were utilized yesterday to fight the fire.
Blairsville’s Municipal Authority has issued a request for people to conserve water as supplies are depleted because of the fire and the water main break.
