Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said yesterday that players whose behavior puts their teammates at risk of contracting coronavirus is “conduct detrimental to the team”. He says he is emphasizing responsibility to his players, especially younger players.
That was just one of the issues Tomlin addressed in a media event. He also has to determine if Ben Roethlisberger will be ready to go for the season opener,adjust to Covid-19 protocols, and to the overall atmosphere of training camp being held at Heinz Field, with the squad split between there and the team’s training facility on the South Side.
Tomlin says evaluating his young players will be different this year, especially with there being no exhibition games on the schedule.
Tomlin says Ben Roethlisberger did NOT throw as planned on Wednesday, but he says Big Ben is still on schedule to return to play after his elbow surgery.
Tomlin said he is not aware of any Steelers who will opt out of playing this season. Division rivals Cleveland and Baltimore each have two guys sitting out and the Patriots have lost six. Tomlin says if they do get an opt-out, they’ll deal with it at that time.
The Steelers have signed free agent safety Curtis Riley. The 28-year-old played all 16 games for the Raiders last season, making 34 tackles, one pass break up and a forced fumble. Riley has also played for New York and Tennessee.
Tampa Bay has agreed to a one-year contract with former Pitt star “Shady” McCoy, who spent last season with the Chiefs. The former Eagles and Bills star has a career-low 465 rushing yards last year and was deactivated for the playoffs.
Former Giants and Jaguars coach Tom Coughlin fractured four ribs, slightly punctured a lung and needed stitches in his head after a nasty bicycle spill. The 73-year-old tells ESPN another rider came out of nowhere and clipped the front of his bike.
