At a special meeting Thursday night, the Homer-Center School Board approved their health and safety plan and a plan to reopen the district under green status.
That means that students will have the option to come to school five days a week with social distancing guidelines and mask rules in effect. Approval of the district’s green status came on a 6-3 vote, with Michael Schmidt, Robert Valyo and Dr. Christa Pontani Palmer voting against the green status.
High School Principal Jody Rainey recommended the green phase, outlining four reasons for the reopening.
Board members praised the district’s elementary and high school administrations for their work on the plans. Board member Joe Izzei, Jr. said that he was confident that if the district had to go back to yellow or red status, they would be able to do so easily.
The district also wants to remind parents that if they do not feel comfortable sending their children to class, there are digital learning options open through the district. Students can attend at home through synchronous instruction, which will allow them to keep pace with students in class. Students can also enroll in Homer-Center’s Academy of Choice, which will allow them to receive the same education, but at their own pace.
The board also approved adjusting the district calendar to have school start on August 31st and the last day would be June 9th. This brings the calendar in line with the ICTC calendar.
