State Representative Jim Struzzi says a bill he introduced yesterday would help businesses comply with environmental regulations “before violations occur and unnecessary fines and penalties are issued.”
Struzzi’s House Bill 2742 establishes a new “Office of Compliance Assistance and Pollution Prevention,” which would operate within the Department of Environmental Protection. It would assist small and medium-sized businesses to comply with rules and regulations by helping them determine applicable environmental requirements and conducting training events across the commonwealth.
Struzzi says many small businesses struggle in their first few years and often don’t have the staff or resources to understand or comply with regulations. The new office would “foster business growth and entrepreneurship while simultaneously helping (them) act as good stewards of our environment.”
The bill has the backing of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry, whose president and CEO, Gene Barr says the regulated community needs “open lines of communication with DEP to understand how to move forward with projects while stewarding natural resources.”
