The Penguins lost in overtime, 3-2 to the Flyers in their only exhibition game before the season restarts on Saturday night. Their first-round opponent, Montreal, also lost, 4-2 to Toronto.
The Flyers’ Scott Laughton beat Tristan Jarry on a breakaway in OT to win. Conor Sheary and Jason Zucker scored for the Penguins.
Coach Mike Sullivan says the rust showed, but the play improved as the game went on.
Sidney Crosby was in the lineup after missing about a week with an undisclosed medical issue. He says it was fun to finally play a game.
Defenseman Brian Dumoulin took a slap shot off his skate and had to leave the ice in the second period, but said it was just a “stinger” and he returned to play. He says the Penguins played okay, but they will have to be better against Montreal.
The Pens and Canadiens face off Saturday night for the first game of their best-of-five play-in series.
