State senator Joe Pittman voiced some concerns during the Senate Appropriations Hearing yesterday.
Both state budget secretary Uri Monson and acting DGS secretary Reggie McNeil were questioned about Governor Shapiro’s proposed $2500 tax credit incentive which would only apply to new police officers, teachers and nurses. His concern is that the incentive only applies to new employees while those who have been in these fields will still need to pay their taxes. He sees that as an “approach that picks winners and losers” and does not address the current crisis in the labor force.
He added that while police officers, teachers and nurses are vital members to communities, he felt that others like bus drivers, EMTs, corrections officers and CDL drivers should also be included in that list and should also be offered tax credit incentives, and says that a cut to the personal income tax that allows workers to keep more in their paycheck as one of the best ways to accomplish this.
With yesterday’s session, the budget hearings for the state house and senate are complete. Recaps of the senate hearings can be found at PAHouseGOP.com and PASenateGOP.com
