The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has once again approved a hike in tolls, but the increase will be larger for those using the turnpike’s Toll by Plate option.
Starting January 3rd of 2021, turnpike toll rates will increase six percent, but those who use Toll by Plate will also see a 45 percent surcharge. Turnpike Commission CEO Mark Compton said that the surcharge is needed to cover the higher cost of processing and mailing bills since it switched to all-electronic tolling. The surcharge will not be added to six locations where motorists pay a separate fee. Those locations are:
- Turnpike Route 66 near Greensburg
- The Gateway Toll Plaza near the PA-Ohio Border
- The Beaver Valley Expressway
- The Findlay Connector near Pittsburgh International Airport
- The Delaware River Bridge at the border with New Jersey
- Keyser Avenue and Clarks Summit toll plazas on the Northeastern Extension
For the average passenger, the E-Z pass toll will go from $1.50 to $1.60. Those who don’t use E-Z pass will see the average toll will go from $2.50 to $3.90. That includes the surcharge.
2021 will be the 13th straight year that the turnpike commission has raised tolls.
