With faculty members at the State System universities overwhelmingly voicing concerns about returning to their campuses for in-person classes next month, their union has started a petition effectively calling on System leaders and university presidents to slow down and reconsider their plans.
More than 1,600 of the approximately 4,800 APSCUF members have already signed the online petition, which is addressed to Chancellor Dan Greenstein, the Board of Governors and its chairperson, Cynthia Shapira, and the fourteen school presidents.
The petition makes five main points:
- That the chancellor acknowledge faculty members’ concerns about unsafe working conditions created by the coronavirus.
- “…prioritizing face-to-face instruction before controlling risk is backwards.”
- That, after the faculty members adapted so well to remote instruction in the spring, the State System continue to trust that they will make the correct decisions now.
- “Out of respect for privacy, no student or employee should be forced to disclose confidential medical or other information as an argument for flexible work or study arrangements.”
- No faculty member or other campus worker should be forced to choose between face-to-face classes or taking leave at reduced or no pay.
