John Ryan Murphy will be the Pirates’ backup to starting catcher Jacob Stallings for the 60-game season. Pirates reserve catcher Luke Maile will be out 10-to-12 weeks after right index finger surgery over the weekend. Maile was hit by a pitch in an intrasquad game.
The Pirates have added Derek Holland to their 40-man big league and opening day roster. Holland came to camp on a minor league contract, but will now be a member of the starting rotation. The 33-year-old lefty went a combined 2-and-5 with a 6:08 ERA in 51 appearances, including eight starts, with the Giants and Cubs last year. He has also pitched for the Rangers and White Sox in 11 big league seasons.
Third base prospect Ke’Bryan Hayes has tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Closer Keona Kela is on the 10-day injury list for an undisclosed reason, and Gregory Polanco is out with Covid-19.
Pittsburgh will play the Indians in an exhibition game tonight in Cleveland. Trevor Williams gets the start for the Bucs. It’s a 7 o’clock airtime on WCCS, FM 101.1 and AM 1160.
