State police are asking everyone to keep ATV safety in mind in the wake of some deaths related to ATV accidents in the region.
Troopers say that Area II, which makes up Troops A, G and H, and includes Indiana County, has seen at least four fatal ATV crashes in the last two months, and so far this year, State Police have investigated 106 ATV crashes, 12 of them DUI-related. Eight people were killed in those crashes across the state, and several have involved children who were injured or killed.
Police and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources stress to parents that there are specific rules concerning kids and ATV’s. Kids under the age of 16 are not allowed to operate an ATV anywhere other than land owned or leased by a parent or guardian, on state forest roads or park roads marked for joint use, across highways or connecting streets unless the child has a valid safety certificate or under the supervision of a licensed instructor during a safety course. Also, anyone under 16 is not allowed to drive an ATV on state or local highways, roads, or streets designated for joint use.
Both organizations also stress that children under the age of 8 are not eligible for a safety certificate and is prohibited from operating anywhere except on private property and 8 and 9-year-old children are restricted to an engine size of 70cc or less.
