An Indiana native has been doing well on the stage in New York and later this year will return to the region in a Shakspearian production.
Matthew Amendt will be back in the area to star in “Hamlet”, which will be put on by the Pittsburgh Public Theater in April. Amendt was a graduate of Indiana High School in 2000, and studied at the University of Minnesota’s Guthrie Theater program. Now living in New York City, Amendt received rave reviews playing the lead role in the Acting Company and Guthrie Theater’s co-production of Shakespeare’s “Henry V”. He also was Prince Hal in “Henry IV parts 1 and 2” in a Washington, D.C. production for the Shakespeare Theatre Company, and recently was part of a reading of the Crispin Whittell adaptation of “A Christmas Carol” alongside David Hyde Pierce, and played Leonardo da Vinci in “A Lost Leonardo” for Amphibian Stage Productions in Texas.
This is not the first time that Amendt has been on the stage at the Pittsburgh Public Theater, as he was a frequent competitor in their Shakespeare Monologue and Scene Contest, winning the contest in 1999. He was also a frequent performer in theatrical productions with the Indiana Players, and the Indiana Junior and Senior high schools, along with other regional theater productions.
The Pittsburgh Public Theater production of “Hamlet” will run April 19 to May 20th at the O’Reilly Theater in Downtown Pittsburgh.
