The frigid weather has kept furnace repairmen, medical personnel, and firefighters busy in the last few days, and the wind chills this weekend are prompting action.
Schools are not open in Indiana County today, and store shelves are being raided for essentials. Homeowners using space heaters are urged to be absolutely certain that they are being operated properly and that there are no flammable objects near them.
Joe Iezzi, the Emergency Management Coordinator for Homer City and Center Township, says they have warm places available for those who have no heat. He says Homer City Borough and Center Township residents should call Indiana County 911 and ask them to contact him, and they will arrange to get the residents into a warm place.
Dawn Landis of IRMC’s Urgicare unit says people should limit their exposure to the cold temperatures and wind. Frostbite can occur in less than a half-hour, and the winds can exacerbate the problem.
The icebox temperatures will ease a bit at the start of next week, with temperatures approaching 40 degrees on Monday.
