The PIAA yesterday announced that it is forging ahead with plans to start fall sports on schedule – of course, with the option of adjusting or even halting the seasons – and that includes the summer high school camps that are currently happening.
After an hours-long Zoom meeting, District 2 Chairman Frank Majikes spoke on behalf of the PIAA.
PIAA Executive Director Robert Lombardi acknowledged that it’s possible that further restrictions could alter the schedule or bring it to a halt, but said Governor Wolf’s announcement of new coronavirus restrictions yesterday should not have a substantial effect on high school sports, for now.
Pennsylvania’s official fall sports under the PIAA umbrella include football, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls golf, girls tennis, girls field hockey and girls volleyball.
Lombardi said some sports will be easier to get rolling than others, so they have to be treated on a sport-by-sport basis.
The PIAA will meet again on July 29th.
Here is the entire press conference in two parts.
