The Penguins worked on the power play yesterday on their third day of training camp. Coach Mike Sullivan rotated forwards Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jake Guentzel and Jared McCann and alternated defensemen Kris Letang and Justin Schultz on the first unit.
The Pens’ power play has been unstoppable at times this season and unwatchable at others. Sullivan said that during the extended layoff, he told his players to put on their coaching hats and help unlock the mystery of the man advantage.
Justin Schultz says the team will need to be playing at the top of their game right from the start against Montreal on August 1st.
Rookie defenseman John Marino noted the differences between his first training camp last fall and this unusual camp in the summer.
Goaltender Tristan Jarry says the net play will have to be sharp against the Canadiens, who led the league this year in the number of shots attempted.
Patric Hornqvist remained off the ice for undisclosed reasons. The team has nine players not practicing because of possible secondhand exposure to a person who’s tested positive for coronavirus.
Defensemen Cale Makar of the Avalanche and Quinn Hughes of the Canucks join Blackhawks forward Dominik Kubalik as the three finalists for the Calder Trophy. John Marino was among the initial group of candidates but did not make the final list.
The league also announced the finalists for the Jack Adams coach of the year award, with the Bruins’ Bruce Cassidy, the Blue Jackets’ John Tortorella and the Flyers’ Alain Vigneault making the cut.
