Pirates’ first-round draft pick Nick Gonzalez has arrived in Altoona to work out with the Bucs’ taxi squad. He’s awaiting the results of a coronavirus test before he can practice.
Gonzalez was not part of the team’s original plans for the squad, but the team decided to bring him to Altoona when pitcher Hector Noesi opted out for family reasons, opening a spot on the 60-man roster.
The Bucs played their second intrasquad game at PNC Park last night. They pumped in some crowd noise, which could be a feature of regular games because teams don’t want their opponents to be able to eavesdrop on their conversations.
While it was static noise and did not feature crowd reactions to plays on the field, Manager Derek Shelton said he wouldn’t mind hearing a beer vendor calling out once in a while.
