The Pirates’ great start rolled on yesterday, but they lost a key part of the team for the long term when Oneil Cruz went down with a devastating injury. Joe Block has the story.
Manager Derek Shelton said after the game it’s too early to tell how long Oneil Cruz will be out.
Shelton was impressed with his starter, Johan Oveido, who threw 6-and-two-thirds innings of five-hit, shutout ball.
Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen got his first rest of the season yesterday, a day after cracking three hits and his first home run on Saturday night. He liked what he saw from the young Bucs.
The Pirates have not yet announced a replacement for Cruz, but a good bet is infielder Tucupita Marcano, who is hitting .500 for Indianapolis and had two hits and 3 RBIs yesterday in the Indians’ fifth straight win.
