In Pittsburgh Pirates news…
Reliever opts out of 2020 season
Right-hander Hector Noesi opted not to play this season because of family concerns, manager Derek Shelton said. He is the first Pirates’ player to choose to sit this season amid the coronavirus pandemic. The Pirates signed the Dominican-born reliever in the offseason to a minor league contract, after going 0-3 with an 8.46 ERA in 2019 with Miami. The 33-year-old right hander has pitched in the majors with the Marlins, Yankees, Mariners, Rangers and White Sox.
Osuna returns following delayed COVID-19 results
Utility player José Osuna is on the field for the Pirates after a delay in his COVID-19 screening results. He said he spent five days in his hotel room since the tests Friday waiting on the results. Osuna, who is entering his fourth season in Pittsburgh, posted career high numbers in 2019, posting a .264 batting average with 10 home runs and a .310 on base percentage in 95 games played. The power-hitting Osuna, along with All-Star first basemen Josh Bell, are rumored to split time at first base and as a designated hitter.
Musgrove, Kuhl toss seven combined innings in simulated game
On the field, starting pitchers Joe Musgrove and Chad Kuhl threw for seven combined innings in a simulated game last night at PNC Park. Kuhl is coming off Tommy John Surgery that caused him to miss the entire 2019 season.
