The Pirates home opener celebrated the return of Andrew McCutchen, but it was a few other players who made the greatest impact as the Bucs won their fourth in a row, a 13-9 drubbing of the Chicago White Sox.
The White Sox got on the board first with an RBI groundout in the top of the first. The Pirates took the lead in the second with a solo homer by Carlos Santana and Ji Hwan Bae had an RBI double. Chicago would re-take the lead with two-run homers from Luis Robert Jr. and Jake Burger in the top of the 3rd. In the bottom half of the inning, Ke’Bryan Hayes hit an RBI double to score Bryan Reynolds. The Pirates then went on a four-run tear in the 4th with an Oneil Cruz single that scored Ji Hwan Bae, then a Reynolds three-run shot. After the White Sox tied the game in the top of the next inning, Jason Delay had an RBI single to score Connor Joe, then Reynolds cleared the bases with a triple and reached home on an error to make it 12-7. Joe would hit an RBI double in the eighth, and while Wil Crowe surrendered two runs, he was able to get the save.
Rich Hill got a no-decision, as he was pulled after allowing a game-tying homer in the 5th inning. Dauri Moreta got the win in relief.
The two teams play again tonight at 6:10 on WCCS. The game will not be streamed on our website due to MLB regulations.
