Pirates outfielder Socrates Brito and reliever Blake Cederlind have tested positive for COVID-19 upon checking into summer camp at PNC Park, manager Derek Shelton announced on Sunday.
These are the first two positive tests coming from the Pirates organization. The hard-throwing Cederlind is the Bucs’ 28th top prospect, 12th top pitching prospect, and Brito was scheduled to begin the season on the team’s “taxi squad” that will work out in Altoona.
Each must have two negative tests before they can rejoin the team. Allegheny County restrictions limiting groups to no more than 25 people have also hamstrung the Pirates, who are unable to play intrasquad games until the order is lifted.
