Kyle Nicolas struggled with his control and the Altoona Curve opened the season with an 8-2 loss to New Hampshire. Nicolas gave up only one hit in 4-and-two-thirds innings, but he walked the first three batters of the second inning and then gave up a dribbler down the third base line that turned into a 3-run double. The Fisher Cats broke open the game in the 6th inning with four more runs off Aaron Shortridge. Matt Gosrki homered for the Curve.
Game two of the three-game series is tonight at 6, with Justin Meis on the mound, making his Double-A debut for the Curve. The right-hander was 7-8 with a 4.10 ERA last year pitching in Class A with Bradenton and Greensboro.
