The Pirates have completed the signings of their 2020 draft class. They’ve come to terms with right-handed pitchers Carmen Mlodzinski, Jared Jones and Nick Garcia.
Mlodzinksi was the 31st overall pick, in the “competitive balance” round between the first and second rounds of the draft. He signed for 2.05-million dollars, according to MLB.com’s Jim Callis.
Jones, the second round choice and 44th overall pick who MLB analyst Dan O’Dowd said has “the highest upside of any player in the entire draft”, will receive a signing bonus of $2.2 million, nearly a half-million over his second-round assigned slot money, and $150,000 over Mlodzinski’s money. Jones was considering going to the University of Texas but signed with the Bucs instead when the slot money was increased.
Third-round pick Garcia, a fire-balling reliever, signed for 1.2-million dollars. He comes as a package deal to the Bucs, who also announced the signing of Garcia’s battery mate at Division III Chapman College. Catcher Joe Jimenez was an undrafted free agent who will get the $20,000 signing bonus mandated by MLB.
The Pirates announced due to a spike of coronavirus cases in Allegheny County they will be closing PNC Park to all outsiders as the team will hold its initial summer camp workout today. That means no media will be allowed. The county has banned all gatherings of more than 25 people and is closing bars, restaurants and casinos for everything but takeout.
