The Indiana County Commissioners also offered a statement concerning the closure of the Homer City Generating Station announced earlier this week.
In a statement, Commissioners Chairman Mike Keith said that they will continue to stand with State Senator Joe Pittman and Representative Jim Struzzi and those who represent the area on a federal level in support of employees, families, trade unions, municipalities and the Homer-Center School District who will be affected by the closure. He said that “fossil-fueled plants have faced insurmountable challenges of a market that does not sufficiently value their contribution to the security and flexibility of our power system.”
The county’s leaders will continue to work with the plant’s ownership on alternative uses for the facility, including but not limited to the installation of other energy-generating capacities. Officials will also start to work with the economic development team to coordinate meaningful and permanent solutions for workers and communities.
