Major League Baseball teams begin their summer training camps today. For the Pirates, it’s their first gathering as a team since a spring training game March 12th against the Blue Jays.
No Pirates players have said they plan to opt out of the season, and the team expects everyone on the 39-man roster to report today. They have one spot still open.
Former Pirates reliever Jared Hughes has agreed to a one-year prorated deal with the Mets. He was with the Astros in spring training but was released before the shutdown. Hughes pitched for the Reds and Phillies last year, and has also played for the Brewers.
The Rockies have signed former Dodgers and Braves star Matt Kemp to a minor league deal.
Shohei Ohtani will resume his two-way career with the Angels when baseball returns. Angels general manager Billy Eppler confirmed that Ohtani will both pitch and hit in the majors this season. Ohtani was only a designated hitter last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery the year before.
The Tigers have signed No. 1 overall pick Spencer Torkelson to a contract – which includes a signing bonus over $8 million – and have added him to the team’s 60-man roster pool for the upcoming season. Undrafted out of high school, Torkelson hit 54 home runs at Arizona State. The Tigers will move the slugging first baseman to third base.
