Pirates relief pitcher Edgar Santana has been suspended for 80 games without pay after failing a drug test for performance enhancing drugs. The 28-year-old right-hander missed the entire 2019 season following Tommy John surgery in 2018. He was sent to Triple-A Indianapolis during Spring Training but was considered a prospect for the Bucs bullpen.
The Pirates have set their 60-man roster for the upcoming, shortened MLB season. Among the 39 players who will report to camp on Wednesday are top prospects Ke’Bryan Hayes, Cole Tucker, and Blake Cederlind. The Bucs can sign one more player.
Aside from missing Santana, the Pirates will also be without Chris Archer, Jameson Taillon and Kevin Kramer, all of whom will be out with injuries for the entirety of the season.

The team also decided against including shortstop Liover Peguero and pitcher Brennan Malone, the two prospects acquired from Arizona last winter in the Starling Marte trade. 2018 top draft pick outfielder Travis Swagerty will be in Altoona.
