The Pennsylvania unemployment rate fell over the last month, but it is still at a high level due to the Coronavirus crisis.
In May, the statewide unemployment rate went down three percentage points to 13.1 percent. That puts the statewide unemployment rate close to the national unemployment rate, which fell 1.4 percentage points to 13.3 percent. The PA Department of Labor and Industry said that the statistics came from the week of May 10th to the 16th, before many of the state’s counties moved to the yellow phase of Governor Tom Wolf’s color-coded reopening plan.
The Pennsylvania Civilian Labor Force went up 23,000 over the month to 6,470,000. Total non-farm jobs were up 198,300 over the month of May for a total of 5,191,400. That marks the highest single-month increase in on record. Jobs increased in 9 of the 11 industry super-sectors. The largest increase was seen in the construction sector, with an increase of 77,400 jobs. That marks a recovery of over two-thirds of its March and April losses.
