State police from the Indiana barracks released their statistics from the 2023 IUPatty’s detail.
Troopers say between Thursday, March 23, and Sunday, March 26, they investigated 393 total traffic incidents. Among them, 178 traffic stops were reported, 126 traffic citations were issued and 81 warnings were written. Additionally, troopers investigated eight crashes.
Troopers also responded to 47 total criminal investigations and/or arrests. Most were for charges related to possession of alcohol by someone under the age of 21, in which 20 arrests were made. Seven arrests were made for alcohol-related DUI investigations, and just a handful of arrests were made for drug-related DUIs, firearms violations and public drunkenness violations.
While traffic and criminal investigations were lower than last year, troopers did respond to several major incidents, notably the chase along Wayne Avenue, a crash near Locust and South Sixth Streets, and the collapse of an apartment building near Medlar Drive.
Despite the number of large incidents, Public Information Officer Trooper Cliff Greenfield said it was the collaboration of other police departments and emergency services allowed for quick responses.
Indiana Borough Police have not released their statistics from the IUPatty’s weekend.
